I have had this antique picture frame laying around, pictureless, for a few years and could not bring myself to let it go because I knew it could be upcycled into something lovely. When I also came across a scrap piece of chalkboard leftover from signage we used for our wedding, I knew how I could marry the two — into a chalkboard! I seem to always find an occasion for which signage is useful or elevates the situation. In addition to the option of making it a permanent part of your décor such as hanging in the kitchen as a message board or for a grocery list, a multi-purpose chalkboard could be useful for writing out a menu at a dinner party or family gathering, welcoming or directing guests at a shower, playing hangman, creating a monthly calendar to hang in your home office, and so much more! Here’s how I put it together.
The frame was already primed and painted from a previous use, so all I needed to do was dust it off to get it ready for paint.
I wanted a glam chalkboard, so I used my favorite metallic gold paint which is extremely gold and shiny. Also, the coverage is great and I only needed a single coat.
I fished four brass screws out of my miscellaneous hardware container to screw into the back.
The scrap piece of chalkboard was already perfectly sized! You can get chalkboard like this cut to your specifications at any home improvement store. I didn’t add any picture hanging hardware to the back of this, because I don’t plan on hanging it on a wall, rather leaning it mostly on the sideboard in our dining room, or using it on a display stand.
My completed chalkboard!
